Whirl into Ecstatic Joy Use this meditation as a means to connect to your core. It is often believed that meditation is something to be done only with closed eyes. However, meditation is actually a state of awareness that can be attained with one’s eyes closed or open. One such open-eyed meditation often practised by Sufis is whirling. Let us explore this unique technique to experience inner stillness through outer movement. Step 1 Begin by playing rhythmic music that helps you feel in tune with your inner self. Step 2 Raise your right hand with your palm facing upwards. Place your left hand on your heart or extend your left hand downwards, with the palm facing the ground. Slowly begin to spin your body anticlockwise, while following your raised hand with your eyes. Step 3 Gradually increase the speed of your whirling. Allow your body to flow with the rhythm of the music; while maintaining your balance. Step 4 As you whirl, you will find your thoughts reducing, your mind slowing down and yourself being in the present moment. Continue for as long as you are comfortable, then reduce the speed of your whirling. Step 5 Finally allow yourself to drop to the ground and breathe freely. Let your mind and body feel the inner calm. Remain in that state of peace. Experience how meditation through movement brings tranquillity within.
